One Sentence Project

At the end of the school year, my team and I ask students to participate in the One Sentence Project, a difficult but rewarding reflective experience that asks them to write one sentence which sums up their legacy, what they want to be remembered for. We photograph each student with their sentence and then make a video of all the photographs.  Although the project gives students the opportunity to demonstrate their academic growth with language and structure, the most valuable outcome of the project is the social/emotional growth revealed.  Their ability to reflect, connect to the world, and then communicate succinctly their desired impact on that world is a sign that they are getting ready to be adults in that world.  I am grateful that I get to work with these wonderful young adults and see each smile as they hold their world in their hands.

I cannot share the students' work here, but I have included my sentence below as a sample of our project and an indication of who I strive to be as a teacher, mother, wife, daughter, and friend.
