Homework Policy

It is your responsibility to stay on top of your homework assignments. Check the board in class, check the class calendar page, check any unit plans you might receive to make certain you know what is due and when. NOTE: on the calendar, daily work is labeled “Today’s Activity”; homework is labeled “Due Today” and is posted on the day it’s due.

  • Unless otherwise directed, all homework should be turned in at the beginning of the hour on the day on which it is due. I often stamp homework at the beginning of class if we are going to use it for discussion; unstamped homework will be considered late, so make sure your homework is stamped!
  • Daily homework must be turned in on the day it is due. Late homework will impede your ability to participate in that day’s activities and may also lower your participation grade.
  • Late work can only be turned in and will only be graded after meeting with me in Resource. I am invested in your success in my class, so if you do not turn in homework on time, you will be asked to meet with me during resource/lunch/after school so that I can help you in understanding the assignment or in creating a time management plan. (Students turning in work that was missed because they were absent on the date due should mark their work “absent” and do not need to make it up in Resource.)
  • Major assignments turned in late will automatically be dropped one letter grade for each day that they are late.
  • All final drafts of essays, reports, and longer writing assignments must be word-processed, double-spaced, and submitted to me via Turn-It-In.com. Please follow all directions on homework assignments; failure to follow directions will result in a reduced grade.
  • GoogleDocs really saves us time and hassle with printing – but if it’s not an assignment that I ask you to submit via GoogleDocs, please make sure you have it printed before class begins. Your printer ran out of ink or your computer died? Our library is open at 6:45 am for your printing needs.
  • All homework should have the following heading in the upper-right hand corner:

Name

Class/Hr

Date

Title of Assignment

Please note: If your homework doesn’t have a name, I cannot grade it; if it doesn’t have a title, I may not know which assignment you have submitted; if it isn’t given the assigned title in GoogleDocs, I may not be able to find it/grade it. Untitled homework will be returned to you for the appropriate heading. Unnamed homework will be left in the “orphaned assignment” basket in the class for assignments without a name; if you don’t get an assignment back, check the “OAB” before you check with me. It is your responsibility to make sure that all identifying information is on your work, and to resubmit any work that needs a name or a title. Students should expect delayed on-line entry of grades given for late/resubmitted work.

A Word To The Wise

Plagiarism is the use, intentional or otherwise, of someone else’s work without giving that source proper credit. This applies whether you’ve downloaded a paper off the Internet, copied a sentence and changed a word or two, or slipped someone else’s sentence into your paragraph. Plagiarism also includes copying someone else’s homework; I will assume that any homework assignment matching a classmate’s word for word has been plagiarized.   Plagiarism will result in an immediate zero. Three instances of plagiarism will result in a failing grade for that class. Please review the Academic Integrity policy in the Student Handbook (p. 52-53 for further details. Plagiarism can be avoided if you remember to cite all sources, and always restate research in your own words.

Tardy Policy

Class begins the minute the bell rings, usually with a DOL, a journal entry, or an activity that will extend the entirety of the class period. Students arriving late, therefore, not only disrupt the learning of their classmates but impede their own academic growth. To ensure that all students benefit from the education Nicolet has to offer, the following tardy policy will be instituted in my class.

  • First tardy: the student will be given a verbal warning, and a phone call home will be made.
  • Second tardy: the student will be assigned a ten minute detention to be served within two days after the infraction, and a phone call home will be made.
  • Third tardy: the student will be assigned a twenty minute detention to be served within two days after the infraction, and a phone call home will be made.

After the third tardy, all student tardies will be referred to the administration.
