 What We Do:  Any class you take should help you to develop valuable skills. You is  emphasized here because the degree of your success in developing skills depends on your work ethic and your willingness to take chances; in short, you need to invest yourself in the learning process. My job is to set up experiences which allow you to develop those skills.

 

Goals:                                                     

Speaking:  You will  develop your ability to communicate in German. In addition to talking about yourself and familiar situations, you will begin to use German to argue persuasively. You will practice interpersonal and presentational speaking tasks.

Writing: You will become better at expressing yourself in written form. You will practice  interpersonal and presentational writing tasks,. Many of your writing assignments will require multiple drafts, using critiques by your classmates and   myself to produce a finished product.

Reading:  You will learn to read better by focusing on contextual clues and mobilizing

familiar vocabulary and grammatical structures and cognates. Reading texts will   include short stories and poems, statistics and reports, lyrics and plays.

Listening: You will further develop your ability to understand spoken German, using native speaker models. Transcription and note-taking will be practiced. We will  use musical texts to develop listening skills.

Cultural Understanding:   You know that all cultures have similarities and differences. You will learn more about the German culture and in doing so come to understand your own culture better.

 

Expectations:                                   

1) All school rules must be obeyed in the classroom.

2) BE HERE. Be in your seats when the bell rings or you will be marked tardy.

 Three or more tardy marks in a quarter will result in a detention.

3) BE PREPARED. Make sure you have all necessary materials (textbook, notebook, Heft, homework, binder etc.) Come prepared to learn as well.

4) BE RESPECTFUL. Respect other people at all times in the classroom and outside of it.

5) BE HONEST. Be honest with yourself and others. If you have a question, ask your teacher or a classmate. Always use your own ideas, thoughts and words for any assignment or test.

 

  Grading:                                   

1) Your quarter grade is computed as follows:    

 ->Interpersonal Assessment: Spoken and Written, one to one communication                 

->  Presentational Assessment: Spoken and Written,third person                 

-> Interpretive Assessment: Listening and Reading:   tests comprehension

->  Formative Communication: In class work, including participation,

-> Homework: Only credit for complete homework                                                                       

2) Grades are based on the following standard:

97% - 100%: A+            94% - 96%:  A                90% - 93%:  A-                    

 87% - 89%: B+              84% - 86%:   B                80% - 83%:  B-  

77% - 79%:   C+              74% - 76%:  C                 70% - 73%:  C-   

67% - 69%:   D+               64% - 66%:  D                 60% - 63% :   D-

 below 60:   F
