This is the start page for the Canvas student learning system for all German Classes at Nicolet High School.  My name is Mark Wagner.  I began teaching German at Nicolet in 1999 and have 30+ years of experience teaching German and American History.  Nicolet offers German 1-AP.  I also teach German at Glen Hills Middle School as well.  I can best be reached via e-mail at mark.wagner@nicolet.us.

In addition to teaching German classes, Nicolet has a German Club, German Honor Society and German Exchange Program (GAPP).  These organizations provide opportunities for students to further their knowledge of German outside of the class.   Nicolet German provides students opportunities to take part in several German competitions, including the WI-AATG German Pronunciation Contest, UW-Madison German Day Competition, the AATG National Exam and DSSV German Essay writing contest.   Nicolet German partners with the Hunger Task Force to offer students service opportunities harvesting vegetables at their farm and sorting donations at their warehouse.

Short-Term Virtual Learning Information

If Nicolet shifts to a virtual learning day because of weather or other short-term reason, we will continue our learning on Canvas.  All the information that you will need for this class on a virtual learning day will be found in the announcement that will appear in our Canvas course. You must submit the work assigned for this day by 11:59 to verify your attendance, but we encourage you to begin your work early enough so that you can use the designated office hour time during the school day for any questions that you might have.

->27 NHS spent 3 ½ weeks of summer 2024 in Germany, seeing cities such as Munich, Berlin and Berchtesgaden, and spending 13 days with host families, attending classes at the Gymnasium Leopoldinum.

-> The NHS German Club hosts Studelfest, Oktoberfest and a Cookie House Competition each year.

->Nicolet German students have won 20 CBYX Scholarships since 2006.  Two were chosen to speak at the Bundestag. Anja DuPlessis and Octavia Grime were 2019-20 CBYX scholars, Soph Franecki in 2021, Jack Drouin in 2022 and Tyler Friedel in 2023.   Natek Meinhardt is spending the year in Greifswald.

->Six NHS alumni have completed internships in Germany, including Tyler Friedel in 2023.

->Nicolet has won seven of the 25 UW Madison German Day Competitions, including 2015,  2013, 2012, 2011 and 2009.

->Soph Franecki won $1000 at the 2020 DSSV Awards ceremony for her essay writing.  Two students have won national grand prizes.

->93% of Nicolet German students passed the German AP in the last seven  years.

->Nicolet has been the top performing high school at the WI-AATG German Pronunciation Contest since 2008.

->Fifteen Nicolet alumni have studied at German universities since 2004.  Three have completed masters degrees, one has a doctorate in international relations.   Ava Crawford-Vukicevic finsihed her  master's degree in Leipzig.  Ollie Bushman studied in Frankfurt spring of 2025.

->Two NHS alumni have won Fulbright Teaching scholarships in Germany and Austria.  Three are working in the field of international education, including Rachel Steinhaus, who currently works for the University of  Würzburg.  Maggie Gerstner works for Fisher Scientific in Würzburg and Natalie Münster works for Next Level Coffee in Berlin.

->Three NHS alumni have taught English in Vietnam, Thailand and Korea.

->One Nicolet alumna is a German teacher with her own GAPP program.

->Nicolet's Alpha Iota Chapter of Delta Epsilon Phi has won two State Farm Good Neighbor Service Learning Awards.

->Our Alpha Iota Chapter was chosen to compete in the 2011 Vorhang auf für Deutsch Competition and organized the 2014 Weiße Rose Exhibit for 1500 visitors. 

->Nicolet German partners with the Hunger Task Force to combat hunger in Milwaukee and serve the community.
